Adoption process

Your adoption journey

We're happy to help you find a new pet to welcome into your family. Here's everything you need to know as you begin.

18+ with ID

Government-issued ID (driver's licence or passport). Bring a utility bill if your address isn't up to date.

$300 – $1,000

Adoption fees vary by animal. Each pet's profile lists their fee.

2-week trial

Every adoption starts with a 2-week foster-to-adopt period, with a refundable fee.

Step 1

Prepare for adoption

Take the time to prepare yourself, your family, and your household before bringing home an adopted pet.

Consider what pet suits your lifestyle

Think about your pet care experience and household dynamics. Each pet is one-of-a-kind and has a unique story — just like you! Ask yourself how much time, training, and energy you're open to providing.

Our pet profiles share key details about each animal's personality, background and care considerations. What we know is limited to the history provided at intake and what we've observed in our care, so profiles are a snapshot.

Get your family and home ready

  • Get your roommate's or partner's consent
  • Double-check pet rules on your lease (if you rent) or strata/association rules (if you own)
  • Puppy- or kitten-proof your home, and get existing pets ready for a new sibling
  • Check your schedule — if you have travel planned in the coming weeks, now may not be the best time
  • Have supplies ready: food, bowls, treats, bedding, toys, litter supplies and flea/tick preventatives

Have your ID ready

You'll need government-issued identification, such as a driver's licence or passport, to complete an adoption. If the address on your ID is not up to date, bring a utility bill. Only adults 18 years of age or older may adopt.

Fees range from $300 to $1,000.

Step 2

Choose a pet

Browse our available pets

Each listing includes a profile with the animal's age, size, personality, and anything else important to know — like training needs, compatibility with other pets, or special care considerations.

Step 3

Make it official

Adoptions are first-come, first-served. Our adoption team reserves the right to postpone adoption to individuals who are not fully prepared to welcome home a new pet.

Complete the adoption application

Once you find an animal you'd like to adopt, submit the adoption application. Share as many details as possible to help us confirm the match.

Start your application

Meet the animal in person

After reviewing your application, we'll arrange an appointment for you to meet the pet at the foster home. If both parties want to proceed, we'll schedule a home visit to bring the pet to your home — so we can see how they react to a new environment and make sure everyone in the household is comfortable.

Bring your new pet home!

The contract is signed once all parties are happy, including payment of the adoption fee. It begins with a 2-week "foster to adoption" period, during which we'll check in frequently. If at any time during this period you feel the adoption isn't the right fit, the adoption fee can still be refunded. After 2 weeks, the adoption becomes permanent.
